![]() TIP: Normally a marinade should be completely scraped off the chops before placing them in the pan, especially if on the acidic side. Flip only once and do not futz with the temperature:). Next place the chops in the skillet (or grill-pan) and cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, depending on how big and thick they are. Alternatively, heat a grill-pan and generously brush it with oil. Add about a tablespoon of olive or vegetable oil. Step 2. Heat a 10 or 12 inch skillet over medium-high heat for about 3 minutes. Then again there is always mint jelly…but I still haven’t come to terms with that yet.For this post we mixed a simple Mediterranean inspired concoction of extra virgin olive oil, garlic, shallots, rosemary, salt and pepper and preserved lemons and a bit of their curing liquid (substitute with lemon zest and a squeeze of lemon juice). Savory, flavorful sides are the perfect complement to lamb. A few personal favs are cheesy rosemary mashed potatoes, roasted red potatoes, and bacon brussel sprouts. Lamb is red meat, so anything that pairs well with a nice steak will most likely go with lamb. The sky is the limit here, but the group that instantly comes to mind is potatoes. Avoid dull or grey-looking meat with yellowing fat. Always buy fresh quality cuts that are brownish red with white fat. American lamb tends to be less gamey than Australian lamb due to its diet.Just like steak, this allows the juices to settle and redistribute throughout the meat. Let lamb rest for 10 minutes after cooking and before cutting/serving.This ensures more accurate cooking times. Remove lamb from the refrigerator 20-30 minutes prior to cooking so it can come to room temp.Always take the meat off the cooking surface 5-10 degrees ahead of the desired final temperature as it will continue to heat as it rests.Be prepared to use a vent fan or open a window. Note: Searing lamb at high temps in a skillet tends to get smokey. Always take the meat off the cooking surface just ahead of the desired final temperature as it will continue to heat as it rests. I personally like my lamb served around medium-rare/medium. Use a digital thermometer if you’re unsure. Medium-rare lamb is served at around 130☏. The trick is to create a garlic/butter/rosemary-infused sauce you can drizzle over the chops at the very end. I like to save the butter, garlic cloves, and rosemary sprigs for the very end so it doesn’t burn. This yields a perfectly juicy medium temp for lamb with a nicely seared exterior. I season both sides with plenty of salt pepper and then sear each side for about 5 minutes in a cast iron skillet on medium-high heat. My Lamb chops recipe is very easy to make. You’ll be amazed how much flavor you can add to meat during a short cook period. It lets you cook/sear the lamb within the flavors, while also fortifying your food with some iron (which is a good thing). The main advantage of cooking lamb chops in a skillet is you can cook with the garlic, rosemary, and butter without everything falling through the grill grates. Now, you add fresh garlic and rosemary to that equation and you’ve taken it to yet another level. However, lamb chops or ‘lamb lollipops’, slightly charred on the grill have always been the exception. It has a very particular taste and can sometimes taste gamey or musky. ![]() I was never much of a fan of lamb growing up. Many people who live on the grid in traditional homes also use well water, particularly if they live in more rural communities or remote homes. There are important maintenance tasks and regular tests for well water that must be completed in order to ensure that it remains safe for drinking. Well water is an alternative to a municipal water system that will give you safe and fresh drinking water. While these technically aren’t power systems, some people who are living off the grid also disconnect from other municipal systems, such as those used for water and sewage. Sewage and Greywater: Avoiding the Municipal Systems If you’re a homesteader, you probably won’t use your devices very often, and won’t need a lot of battery life in them-you’ll probably be busy with other aspects of homesteading life, such as maintaining crops or animals, emptying the composting toilet, cooking and cleaning, and other home projects. Cars are sort of like large generators, and each one charges their own battery as they run, so you can take advantage of this by simultaneously using the battery as a power source for your small devices. This is a super-efficient way to make use of a vehicle. Some homesteaders who use vehicles have been known to use power inverters in their cars to charge smaller devices (such as cell phones, laptops and tablets) while they run errands. Plus, you can’t argue with the importance of reducing fossil fuel consumption! Power Inverters for Vehicles: Ideal for Charging Small Devices However, in the long run, the savings will pay off. ![]() Unfortunately, geothermal systems have a larger cost upfront than some other types of renewable energy. The geothermal unit then uses the temperate water to heat or cool the air, which is circulated through the home in ducts. Water is pumped through piping in the ground, and circulated back to a geothermal unit in the home, which essentially replaces both the furnace and air conditioning unit. As a result, we can take advantage of this to keep our homes at a comfortable temperature, without having to burn fossil fuels. The theory behind geothermal energy is that the Earth, below the frost line, has a constant and reliable temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a less common, yet effective way to regulate the temperature of your home. Geothermal Energy: Reduces Fossil Fuel Consumption The idea is that the heat from the sun is magnified by the cooker’s reflective and conductive materials, and then concentrated within its compact space, so it can heat food to safe temperatures. Regardless, living off the grid doesn’t have to mean boiling water to have a nice warm bath!įinally, using a solar cooker is a cool and interesting way to cook food by using solar power. Solar water heaters will also make use of the sun’s power to heat water for your home! These come in many different configurations, and some may be more effective than others, depending on where your home is situated. As with the energy produced by wind turbines, this energy can be stored in batteries for later use, and there can be kickbacks for sharing excess energy with the grid if you happen to be connected to it. Solar panels work due to photovoltaic cells that capture the light from the sun and turn it into electric energy. They can be costly to set up, but with green living gaining traction, governments will often offer rebates and incentives for green energy systems such as these. ![]() Solar panels are arguably one of the most common and readily available forms of renewable energy. Adding a small hole to the balloon allows for the overflow of air to escape without the balloon exploding, and this is sort of how grounding equipment works, too. Grounding equipment literally connects your system to the ground, as an “escape route” for extra electricity when the system gets overloaded for example, during a power surge from a lightning strike. Safety disconnects are particularly vital to protecting your system from a power surge arising from lightning-or even a power surge that comes from the grid, if you’re connected to it. This equipment will protect both your system and the people around the system. Safety equipment is also crucial when it comes to your ability to maintain your renewable energy systems, especially if you’re in a remote location. If I want to share my feeds with someone else with NNW, I send my feed list as a downloadable file for people to import if they wish. Would it be cool to go beyond that? Absolutely. NetNewsWire has a very basic capability: you can create "smart lists" which pull news items from different feeds you already subscribe to. I'm not sure what the value is to Yahoo - unless it's attention data, learning more about what feeds people read, what they filter in, what they filter out, etc. What are your thoughts on feed parsing utilities like Yahoo Pipes? Is there a future here? My obsession is the entire economy of news. I'm obsessed with how news circulates: with what people do with it once they have it, where it goes, how it gets to someone else, how someone else decides to read it or not. Will NetNewsWire 4.0 add a fifth big change? I'll say this: I'm obsessed with how people get their news, with what helps, what slows people down, what's too difficult, what's overload, what's not enough. The fourth big change was actually adding a mobile client, NetNewsWire for iPhone. For the sake of NetNewsWire users I needed to be already in the position of being able to do cross-platform syncing. Though the NewsGator acquisition happened way back in 2005, I was already convinced that NetNewsWire users would be using mobile devices of some kind (whether from Apple or not I didn't know), and that mobile would be huge. It wasn't just syncing that was important, but syncing across different RSS readers running on different platforms. The third big change was adding NewsGator syncing. The weblog editor, most notably, was transformed into a separate app: MarsEdit, now in the wonderful care of Daniel Jalkut. At the same time, we also stripped out some other features that didn't belong. Based on the feedback I've had over the years, I conclude this is something people love. I was sure that it would need this feature - and I was correct, though there were some people telling me it was a bad idea. The second was when NetNewsWire 2.0 shipped: we included a built-in tabbed browser. It was a huge hit for the time, way surpassing my expectations. The first was its very existence - the first desktop app RSS reader for Mac OS X. NetNewsWire has gone through several big changes in its seven-year lifetime. ![]() Anything you can talk about that will build some more excitement? I see on Inessential that version 4.0 of NNW is coming up. It isn't a replacement, but it is becoming my new "first click". I am finding for the first time I am using Tweetie/Tweetdeck/Twitterific as much as NNW to get a my favorite site feeds. I am interested in what you are doing with NNW. And so there are lots of people glad we made the change. For the year-and-a-half before switching to Google Reader, the biggest feature request *by far* was that we switch over to Google Reader syncing. It's funny - the pissed-off people always speak up, and happy people usually happily keep quiet. Were you surprised? What went into that decision? But it will be just one piece of code.Īlthough many customers were vocal opponents of your decision to go to Google Reader as an online reader/sync solution, I think it turned out pretty well. For instance, soon I'm hoping to get posting to Facebook working in TapLynx and NetNewsWire for iPhone. The situation is such that I couldn't really say where I spend most of my time. I'm less and less involved with directly creating apps for other people. Often I'm working on two or three at the same time when I'm working on a given piece of code. TapLynx is a framework for people who want to make iPhone apps like the All Things Digital app.Īll three products are closely related, of course: they share code, and they're all feed readers. First thing: I've been a huge fan of your software for as long as I can remember (I think it went 1.0 in 2003?) Thanks for taking time away of your busy development work to chat. I thought it would be interesting to talk to Brent Simmons, the developer behind NetNewsWire, about the recent changes in the application, how he plans on integrating social services like Twitter and where development is heading. ![]() In the end this game is as good as I though it would be, but as a video game it had faults, more than pros. In the above 2015 interview with Smosh Games, Shigeru Miyamoto noted there were no current plans for a new game, but that could change if Nintendo were to develop a controller interface uniquely suited to its style.
